I had a conversation with a friend about the difference between “cultural ” and “traditional”. I would consider mashed potatoes to be a traditional Danish dish. As for “cultural” I’m not even completely sure what that means when applied to food but I would like to know in which culture mashed potatoes originated. Oh mystery…

I don’t know about the mashing, per se, but Peru definitely claims to have discovered the potato and to have (depending on who you speak to) somewhere between 600 and 2000 varieties. And they do eat it mashed, in a dish called causa. So I’m voting for Peru!
